Abstract
Cytokines are small protein or glycoprotein molecules that facilitate communication between cells, acting as important regulators alongside hormones and neurotransmitters. They exert their effects by binding to specific cell receptors, which then trigger gene expression and influence cellular behavior and characteristics. Their actions are tightly controlled by various inhibitors that help regulate their biological impact and maintain balance in cellular responses. Based on their roles, cytokines can be grouped into growth factors, pro-inflammatory, and anti-inflammatory types. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, are especially important in the development of inflammation. They coordinate immune responses by promoting fever, activating leukocytes, and causing metabolic and endocrine changes. These molecules also contribute to protein breakdown and broader systemic effects that support immune defense. In addition, cytokines play a role in metabolic regulation by affecting nutrient utilization, energy balance, and the production of acute-phase proteins. Overall, cytokines are central to the regulation of immune function, inflammation, and metabolism. A clear understanding of how they interact and function is important for advancing treatments aimed at managing immune-related and inflammatory diseases.
