Abstract

Anchored on the objective of understanding the current challenges in the teaching and learning of reading skills within the basic education context in Philippines, this systematic review identifies intervention strategies and evaluates their effectiveness based on empirical and anecdotal evidence from ten published studies (S1–S10) that met the inclusion criteria for thematic analysis. The findings reveal a persistent need for multi-faceted approaches to address reading skill gaps, particularly in pedagogy and resource management. Specifically, the results highlight the importance of strengthening teachers’ professional development, improving the readability and accessibility of instructional materials, and fostering stronger collaboration between schools and families. Overall, the study underscores the need for integrated and sustained interventions to enhance reading outcomes in basic education.
